Tragedy at Pompoota: One teenager killed, another reported after road crash
Plus a fire destroys a house at Tailem Bend.
A teenager from Pompoota has died in a road crash in the area.
The 17-year-old’s motorbike collided with a car at the corner of Burdett Road and Survey Road at Pompoota at 8.30pm on Sunday.
Emergency services rushed to the scene but were unable to save the rider.
The car’s driver, a 17-year-old from Murray Bridge, was not physically hurt but was taken to hospital as a precaution.
He was later reported for aggravated driving without due care, and will face court at a date yet to be determined.
Burdett Road was closed for several hours while major crash investigators inspected the scene on Sunday night.
The intersection where the crash occurred is a crossroads on a corner, with trees lining boths sides of the main road.
A single posy of flowers had been placed there by Monday morning.
The Pompoota teenager was the 48th person to lose his life on a South Australian road this year, and the 10th motorcyclist.
Fire destroys house at Tailem Bend
Police are investigating after a suspicious fire destroyed an unoccupied house at Tailem Bend on Saturday.
The Country Fire Service’s Brett Williamson said emergency services responded to a 000 call about the fire on Kulde Road just after 12.30am.
“Five CFS crews, SA Police and SA Ambulance services arrived to find the 100-year-old stone home engulfed in flames, with the fire spreading to nearby trees,” he said.
“Crews were able to protect neighbouring properties, but the stone home was destroyed.”
No injuries were reported, but the fire caused an estimated $100,000 worth of damage.
Fire cause investigators later visited the scene, but were not immediately able to determine what had happened.
Detectives from SA Police's Murray Bridge criminal investigation branch are now looking into the matter.
