An Adelaide man has died in a road accident on the Dukes Highway at Elwomple, just south of Tailem Bend.

Emergency services were called to the scene of a collision between a Hyundai sedan and a hay truck around 9.50am on Wednesday.

The driver of the car, a man from Paradise, died at the scene.

The truck driver was not physically hurt.

However, both vehicles caught on fire, sparking a blaze which took several hours to bring under control and kept smouldering into the evening.

The highway was closed for most of the day but reopened by about 5.30pm.

Complicating matters, the Mallee Highway was also closed for much of Wednesday after a truck rollover at Jabuk around 2pm.

Police took the unusual step of suggesting motorists avoid travelling between South Australia and Victoria unless they were willing to take the Princes Highway along the coast or the Stuart Highway through the Riverland.

Anyone with information or dash cam footage which may help police with their investigation into the Dukes Highway crash should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or at www.crimestopperssa.com.au.
