Don’t leave your junk on the footpath – get it taken away for free
Too many locals don’t know about a helpful local service, the Murray Bridge council says.
What should you do with all that junk you’ve got in the shed, or the spare room, or lying around?
If you live in the Murray Bridge council area, you can get it taken away for free.
Every local resident is entitled to one free hard rubbish collection per year.
All you need to do is make a booking with Orana with at least two weeks’ notice, then put your unwanted stuff – up to two cubic metres’ worth – out on the footpath.
Council assets and infrastructure general manager Tim Tol said it had become increasingly common for people to dump stuff on the street when their leases ended and they had to leave a property.
“When that happens, the items just sit there until someone reports them to the council as dumped rubbish,” he said.
“Not all people may be aware there are significant fines for illegally dumping rubbish on public land.”
He encouraged locals to take advantage of the free service instead.
The council decided to launch a public education campaign last month after noticing a spike in the number of complaints it was receiving about rubbish being left on footpaths.
