Donate blood in Murray Bridge and save up to three lives
Red Cross service Lifeblood is calling on Murraylands residents to continue their life-saving donations this February, following a massive 2023.
Murray Bridge blood donors saved almost 2800 lives last year, and Red Cross hopes they’ll be willing to do it again in 2024.
The astonishing figure came from Red Cross Lifeblood spokeswoman Zoe Ross, who said 448 people had donated blood in Murray Bridge over the past 12 months.
Fifty-three of those donors were first-timers.
Together they made 924 donations to help people dealing with cancer treatment, blood disorders, major surgery, childbirth and other situations.
“There is clearly a strong desire from the people of Murray Bridge and surrounds to do something to help those who require blood,” Ms Ross said.
“Each donation can save up to three lives, so as many as 2772 lives were saved by local donations.”
She encouraged those donors, and more new donors, to step up when the Red Cross Lifeblood van returned to Murray Bridge on February 12-15.
Demand for blood, plasma and platelets had risen by three per cent in the past year, she said, and was expected to keep rising as Australia’s population grew.
A blood donation appointment lasts less than one hour, and the donation itself less than 10 minutes.
