Cycling club looks to Murray Bridge Showground for future track

The Murraylands Cycling Club has unveiled plans for a 1000-metre track and 400-metre velodrome at Murray Bridge Showground in the wake of its annual general meeting.

The club had previously focused on Sturt Reserve as the best site for a traffic-free training facility and race track.

But its members are now working with the Murray Bridge council to incorporate the idea into a master plan for the showground, where a new basketball stadium will also be built in the near future.

The cycling venue would be made available for anyone in the community to use.

Thirteen members gathered for the club’s annual general meeting on September 21 at the Murray Bridge Hotel.

Outgoing president Jason Woodard’s report covered all the great things the club had achieved, including hosting a junior road skills development camp, helping out with the state titles at Mypolonga, and having club kit and casual wear produced.

Treasurer Phil McGee presented an audited financial report and noted the wonderful financial assistance the club had received from the Murray Bridge council to help get its website up and running.

The president’s role was taken over by Doug Issell, while Adam Bright stood unopposed as vice president and the position of secretary was filled by Michelle McNeil.

Mr Issell thanked Mr Woodard for doing “a remarkable and conscientious job”.

“The year ahead will be about negotiating the web of governments to eventually achieve a home for the club,” he said.

“Hopefully it will be a year where we see the younger folk of the area play an important role in our development.

“We must be recognised as a club for all ages and abilities and that our hand of friendship is extended to all.”
