Police have laid charges against a Murray Bridge woman over a crash at Mobilong which killed her passenger on Tuesday.
The woman’s car swerved off Pump Road at Mobilong, rolled and landed upside-down in an irrigation channel just before 1.20pm, according to SA Police.
Tyre tracks at the scene, marked with blue paint, suggest the vehicle was travelling around a corner immediately before the accident.
The driver, a 21-year-old from the nearby suburb of Northern Heights, escaped the wreckage and ran to the nearest home – almost a kilometre away – to alert emergency services.
Police arrived within minutes and jumped into the water to try and save her passenger, a 21-year-old Murray Bridge woman.
Despite their best efforts, and those of paramedics, the passenger died at the scene.
The driver was taken to hospital with only minor physical injuries.
Major crash investigators and divers from SA Police’s water operations unit spent some time at the crash scene, learning what they could.
On Wednesday, police charged the driver with causing death by dangerous driving.
She was granted bail ahead of an appearance at Murray Bridge Magistrates Court on September 29, but was banned from driving until further notice.
Mourners have since begun leaving flowers and other mementos at the scene.

Two left fighting for life after weekend crashes
Meanwhile, two other drivers had already been left fighting for life after separate crashes at Wynarka and Murray Bridge South on Saturday.
Around 3.50pm, a Nissan SUV ran into a stobie pole on Jervois Road at Murray Bridge South.
A 16-year-old passenger in the car sustained life-threatening injuries in the collision.
The driver and two other passengers were also taken to hospital.
Half an hour earlier, around 3.20pm, a Toyota ute had collided with a tree on the Karoonda Highway at Wynarka.
A 67-year-old Aldinga Beach woman was airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Traffic restrictions were put in place at both crash sites for several hours while major crash investigators took a look.
Police asked anyone who may have witnessed either of Saturday’s crashes to contact Crime Stoppers.
