Country Fire Service volunteers have managed to contain a challenging fire just outside Wellington.

The fire was first reported in reeds on a property on Karpany Road just after 9.20am on Wednesday, in terrain that proved difficult for firefighters.

By midday, around 25 firefighters and five trucks from Jervois, Tailem Bend and Murray Bridge were involved in the fight.

“A large amount” of smoke drifted across the area of Karpany Road, Langhorne Creek Road, Lovely Banks Road and Hawks Nest Road.

But by mid-afternoon, thanks to an “exceptional” back-burning effort by firefighters, the fire was contained and prevented from spreading any further.

About seven hectares were burnt along the shore of Lake Alexandrina.

Smoke is likely to remain in the area for some time, and locals are advised not to go there unless they need to.

Symptoms of smoke exposure may include shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing, burning eyes, a runny nose, chest tightness, chest pain and dizziness or light-headedness.

If you or anyone in your care is having difficulty breathing, seek medical attention at your local GP.

If your symptoms become severe, call 000.
