Celebrate Australia Day in Murray Bridge and Tailem Bend

Australia Day will be celebrated with barbecues, awards and citizenship ceremonies around the Murraylands this Friday.
In Murray Bridge, the Edwards Square sound shell will be the venue for a free community breakfast starting at 7am.
Pioneering journalist and theatre critic Samela Harris will be the guest speaker during the official part of the event, which will begin at 7.45.
Awards will be given out to deserving locals in four categories: citizen, young citizen and community event of the year, plus an award for active citizenship.
Some of the Murray Bridge district’s newest residents will then make their pledges of Australian citizenship.
Mayor Wayne Thorley encouraged everyone to come along, share a hot breakfast, get to know their neighbours and celebrate the achievements of local legends.
“This is a day to reflect on what it means to be Australian, to celebrate Australia today, our shared values, and to acknowledge our history,” he said.
“Australia Day awards are a testament to the extraordinary efforts of people who contribute tirelessly to the vitality of our community.
“It’s not just a ceremony, it’s a celebration of our collective spirit and achievements.”
At Tailem Bend, an awards ceremony and lunch will start at 11am in the town hall.
Tailem Bend Progress Association will help locals celebrate this year’s award winners: citizen of the year Sandy Przibilla and, for 40 years of Tailem Bend Music Hall, the local Rotary Club.
Australia Day events will also be held at Mannum at 7am, Jabuk at 8am, Karoonda at 9am and Meningie at 9.30am, among other locations around South Australia.
Federal MP Tony Pasin urged all Australians, wherever they were, to celebrate our nation’s success on January 26.
“We can, and indeed should, celebrate the fact that in shaping a nation that is the envy of the world, we have together overcome, over generations, significant challenges and adversity,” he said.
“Australia is a vibrant, thriving country that punches well above its weight globally because we have successfully blended our Indigenous heritage with our British inheritance and the cultures of those from the four corners of the earth that have come to call Australia home.”
To mark the occasion, Mr Pasin announced on Friday he would make free bumper stickers saying “together under one flag” available at all of his electorate offices.
