Bridgeport Hotel will introduce ‘quiet dinners’
The Murray Bridge pub has announced it will host monthly events to better cater to diners with autism or sensory issues.
A Murray Bridge pub plans to break down barriers for diners with autism by hosting “quiet dinners” once a month.
The Bridgeport Hotel’s aim is to provide a safe, comfortable environment where people can not only dine in but also enjoy a relaxing getaway.
The dinners will commence next Monday, April 29 in the Bridgeport Hotel’s Charles Sturt function room and continue to be held on the last Monday of every month in collaboration with Autism SA.
The function room will be specially prepared with low lighting and reduced sound, with no background TV to minimize distractions, and tables will be adequately spaced apart to ensure space and privacy.
Guests will be able to place orders using an online system accessed through QR codes on the tables.
In addition to the à la carte menu, a sensory menu featuring simple dishes such as grilled chicken, white rice and hot cooked vegetables will be offered.
The seating arrangements include two sessions: the first from 5.30 to 7pm for families and the second from 7pm to 8.30pm for adults only.
Sensory equipment will be incorporated to enhance the dining experience and guests will be encouraged to bring headphones if they plan on using personal devices.
For guests needing a break or some space away from others, the adjoining boardroom will serve as a small reset room.
The main reasons cited by individuals with autism and their families who do not dine out are crowds, noise and light levels, according to Autism SA.
These environmental factors can often overwhelm and distress individuals with autism, making outings to public places challenging.
One in every 100 people in Australia are autistic, but 58 per cent steer clear of venues such as pubs and bars altogether.
