There are no suspicious circumstances around the death of a man whose body was found in the heart of Murray Bridge on Monday night, police say.
A passer-by spotted the man’s body in a disused railway cutting off Bridge Street, near the Round House, just after 7pm.
Authorities soon taped off the surrounding area, and forensic investigators spent most of the night trying to piece together a picture of what might have happened.
On Tuesday morning, police identified the man as a 51-year-old of no fixed address who had been camping in the area.
Murray Bridge News understands the man was well-known local identity Craig Hollands, who was often seen around town wearing a sundress and walking his little dog.
His death prompted an outpouring of grief in the community.
Members of a community Facebook group remembered him as “a beautiful bright soul in this dim world”, someone who always had a smile and a kind word to say as he passed people in the street.
Someone even created a makeshift shrine to his memory at an entrance to the Murray Bridge Marketplace shopping centre, in a spot where his dog often used to sit.
“You are gone, but will never be forgotten,” said a message on one bunch of flowers.
Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
