Families, friends, fur babies and anyone who cares about a brighter tomorrow is invited to head to Murray Bridge’s Sturt Reserve for a cancer-smashing fun day next Thursday, October 29.

Community group Regional Cancer Fighters will host the Bandanna Day event in aid of Canteen, a charity which provides practical and emotional support to teens and young people impacted by cancer.

It is expected to be the biggest event of its kind in South Australia for 2026.

Between 12 and 4pm there will be:

  • Activities including free face painting, colouring-in and doggy fancy dress competitions, plus a raffle
  • Food and drinks from Sword and Ox, Sweet Annie’s, Tachs Stroopwafels and River Bites
  • Stalls with information from Moorundi, Proactive Health, Headspace, AC Care and more
  • Live music from Stacey and Son and Barney Rebel

Plus, of course, attendees will be able to buy a bandanna or make a donation to Canteen.

Organiser Mandy Payne said she was proud to have been able to pull the event together, thanks largely to the generosity of locals and participating organisations.

“It’ll be a lot of family fun,” she said.

“Word’s getting around, and everyone has been really supportive.”

The cause was one that was close to her heart, she said – during her battle with breast cancer three years ago, Canteen had been an invaluable support to her daughter.

“We wanted to give back to Canteen and help Canteen because they’re a wonderful organisation, helping out youth and families going through cancer,” she said.

“There are so many cancer patients regionally and rurally.”

Anyone unable to make it on the day will also be able to show their support by buying a bandanna through Regional Cancer Fighters – just follow the charity on social media to find out how.
