Baby zebra born at Monarto Safari Park

Keepers are already foaling in love with Monarto Safari Park's newest resident.

A baby zebra, the 14th member of the park's herd, was born to 13-year-old Gina on Sunday morning.

The youngster's sex is not yet known.

Assistant curator Anna Bennett said the newborn had stuck pretty close to his or her mother so far, in an enclosure away from the other zebra.

"Mum and baby are doing really well," she said.

"There is plenty of space for them, so they are keeping to themselves and having plenty of bonding time.

"The foal is looking really strong and healthy and feeding well."

The plains zebra is classified as near-threatened in the wild due to the impact of livestock farming, hunting, trapping, drought and war, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Although members of the public cannot currently visit the safari park due to restrictions associated with COVID-19, Zoos SA has been broadcasting regular videos of its animals online.
