Austin Seven club rallies at Tailem Bend
Meet Steve and Beryl Thorpe, off to Mildura with their little four-cylinder Austin A7 in tow.
On the morning of June 14, two members of Adelaide’s Austin Seven Club rest quietly in front of the Tailem Bend Information Station, in anticipation of what is to follow.
Excitement was hanging in the air as the members eagerly rallied and waited for fellow members to arrive so they could begin the four-wheeled adventure.
Like all the members joining the road trip, Steve and Beryl Thorpe of Adelaide were trailering their little four-cylinder Austin A7 to Mildura.
Before embarking on the road trip of a lifetime their enthusiasm and excitement was palpable.
The Thorpes, seasoned adventurers, meticulously checked their car before they left home and once again in Tailem Bend before members arrived, Beryl adjusting her scarf, eyes twinkling with excitement.
“Ready for this, Steve?” Ms Thorpe asked, her voice brimming with anticipation.
Mr Thorpe, with a confident nod, replied, “Always ready for our next adventure, Beryl.”
First sold in 1922, the Austin Seven featured many different body styles but remained one of the most affordable vehicles available to motorists between the two world wars.
The four-cylinder 747cc engine proved to be reliable and, with minor modifications, remained in use up to 1939.
Their clubs’ plans were simple yet inspiring to the crowd that was forming: drive their little Austin Sevens through the picturesque Menindie Lakes region to the historic town of Broken Hill, an 800-kilometre journey that promised both challenges and breathtaking views.
The convoy of vintage cars began to grow gleaming in the morning sun, a testament to their owners’ dedication.
As more members arrived the camaraderie grew, stories were shared, laughter echoed, and final preparations were made.
The sight of the small, colourful Austins gathered was both nostalgic and heartwarming.
For the Austin Club, this was more than just a trip; it was a testament to their shared passion and the joys of exploring the open road together.
