Anzac Day 2024: Wellington community gathers in commemoration
Wellington Progress Association Incorporated holds Anzac day service honouring past soldiers.
Nearly 200 community members have gathered beneath the rising sun at Wellington Hall for an Anzac Day dawn service.
The service commenced with a welcome from Bob Radford, secretary of the Wellington Progress Association, followed by prayers, scripture and the laying of wreaths.
The sound of the Last Post fell over the crowd but the minute’s silence seemed louder as attendees reflected on the sacrifices made by fallen soldiers.
Mandy Parker sang the national anthem with pride, despite the accompanying soundtrack not working in her favour.
“It’s pretty good for a small town,” Mr Radford said.
He liked to take the day to remember his past family, who were serving members, he said; and to recognise how different the country would be without the sacrifices made.
“We’ve got a lot to be thankful for,” he said.
Veteran Jon Oliver, who has been involved in the service for 15 years, said not only did it mean a lot to him personally, but he also valued the wider community that attended.
“We see a lot of people come here who aren’t necessarily residents of Wellington, but it’s an appeal to people of a wider section and gives people who don’t live near a town an opportunity to come somewhere to pay their respects,” he said.
Following the service, a shotgun breakfast was hosted by the progress association, providing an opportunity for the community to come together, share stories and enjoy a delicious hot breakfast.
