An X-man returns to the Murraylands
New Murray Bridge News journalist Michael X. Savvas is a third-generation X-man. His grandfather and father were both Murraylands citizens who had ‘X’ in their names.
Hi. I’m excited to be working at Murray Bridge News with my former creative writing student Peri Strathearn.
I love meeting people, discovering their stories and writing about them.
And the Murraylands are in my blood: My grandparents both lived here.
My pop Xenophon – known by locals as X – was an orange farmer in Mypolonga, and my dad Dennis X. Savvas went to school in Murray Bridge.
More recently, my cousin Steve Murphy was a DJ at Power FM for six years.
In my career to date, I’ve worked as a journalist, publisher, editor and university lecturer.
The common thread in these jobs is a love of words.
I’ve written for publications such as The Times on Sunday and The Adelaide Review.
At The Adelaide Review, I wrote a column, “Good Country”, where I’d travel to any SA town or region that looked interesting and write about its attractions and people.
This got me hooked on country travel.
The family home in Mypo is still there, thanks to the supportive local community who rallied around to save it from flooding in 1956.
I look forward to meeting many people and becoming a part of the community. If you see me, please come up and say hello.
